Geothermal modelling in 3D: ROSIM v1.2.0 available in NLOG

ROSIM is a tool developed by TNO-GDN. With this tool, one can build static 3D geological subsurface models and perform flow simulations. ROSIM stands for Robust Simulator, and is used for subsurface evaluations in applications such as geothermal energy and subsurface heat storage, thereby contributing directly to the energy transition and the development of geothermal energy and heat storage projects in the Netherlands.

ROSIM and DoubletCalc3D are used in ThermoGIS to calculate the HT-ATES potential maps

Functionalities of ROSIM

  • Create 3D subsurface model
Quickly build a 3D model using the layer-cake approach, or load an existing subsurface model via a GRDECL file.
  • Integration with simulation tools
Perform flow simulations using DoubletCalc 3D or OPM (Open Porous Media).
  • Visualisation of results
Simulation results, such as temperature or flow development in the subsurface can be viewed with the open-source visualisation package ResInsight.
  • Run scenarios automatically
ROSIM can automatically perform multiple calculations, from building 3D models to calculating flow simulations. This makes it easy to compare different scenarios, taking into account uncertainty or variations in the properties of the subsurface.
  • Validation by benchmark study
TNO has compared the performance of DoubletCalc 3D with a reference simulator. The benchmark report is available via the NLOG website.
