ThermoGIS v2.5, august 2025

The main change for the v2.5 release of August 2025 is a new version of the temperature model that is used to calculate the techno-economic maps. Temperature is a key variable when assessing the geothermal potential of an aquifer. It doesn’t matter how permeable an aquifer is, if the temperatures are low then the economic potential of the aquifer will also be low.

Békési et al. 2020 published the last temperature model for the Netherlands. In this updated model the major changes consist of:

  1. A more detailed (3D) lithological model allowing for lithology-dependent thermal parameters to be taken better into account.
  2. An updated modelling workflow
  3. Bug-fixes in how the Conductivity and Radiogenic heat fields are populated

While the following has stayed the same

  1. The inverse methodology (ESMDA)
  2. The model parameters being fit (Conductivity & Radiogenic heat)
  3. The borehole temperature data being fit

Further technical information about the temperature model as used in ThermoGIS v2.5 can be found here. The temperature model itself can also be requested by e-mail (thermogis@tno.nl).
