The main changes in ThermoGIS version 3.0 are:

  • Addition of the Breda Formation
    The deposits of the Breda Formation are relatively young and therefore buried to depths that are too shallow in many places to be of interest for geothermal energy. In parts of Flevoland, Gelderland, Noord-Brabant, Noord-Holland and Utrecht, however, its depth exceeds 1,000 metres. At this depth, a temperature of 50 °C is possible. Within the WarmingUP GOO and other projects, attention has been given to mapping the depth, thickness and rock properties of the two members of the Breda Formation: Groote Heide and Diessen. As a result, sufficient information is now available to calculate a first estimate of the geothermal potential.

    In this release, constant values have been assumed for the net-to-gross ratio, porosity and permeability because of the limited availability of measured reservoir properties. In addition, the mapping is still limited to those locations where the expected geothermal potential is greatest. The mapping made use, among other subsurface data, of the SCAN seismic lines. In areas where less seismic data is available, the mapped depths and thicknesses are very uncertain.

    The geothermal potential was calculated using the same scenario as for the other units, including an injection temperature of 30 °C and drilling and completion of the entire reservoir at an angle of 45°, among other assumptions. The calculations show that a capacity of more than 5 MW is possible at the best locations. For the relatively low temperature and depth, however, these may not be the optimal settings. For example, a lower injection temperature could be chosen by using a heat pump, or a different well design could be applied.
